What Are AI Product Backgrounds?

Pixerr uses advanced AI technology to generate professional "lifestyle" style backgrounds for each of your product variants (mugs, phone cases, apparel, and more).

Instead of showing flat, generic mockups, AI backgrounds place your products in realistic settings that make them look like they belong in a professional photo studio or lifestyle catalog.

The result: Your products look more professional, trustworthy, and appealing — which typically leads to more clicks and sales compared to basic mockups.

Marketplace Requirement:

To be shown publicly in Pixerr's marketplace, products must have at least one AI-generated background image per published variant (or per hero variant, depending on your product setup).

You can still create and edit products without backgrounds, but when you try to publish, we'll ask you to generate AI backgrounds first.

How to Generate Backgrounds

Step-by-Step Guide

Open Product Editor

Navigate to your product in the Dashboard and click "Edit" to open the product editor.

Find the Background Section

Scroll to the "Product Image Background" section in the product editor.

Choose a Style

You have two options:

Quick Presets: Choose from categories like Beach, Luxury, Urban, Studio, Seasonal, and more
Custom Prompt: Type your own description (e.g., "cozy coffee shop interior" or "modern minimalist desk")

Generate Background

Click "Generate Background". If you have free generations remaining, the background is generated at no cost. Otherwise, Pixerr will show you the token cost before confirming.

Wait for Completion

A background generation job runs in the background. When it's finished:

Your variant images update automatically
You'll receive a notification
The new background appears in your product preview

Regenerating Backgrounds

Don't like the first result? You can regenerate backgrounds for any product variant.

How to Regenerate:

Open the product editor
Go to the "Product Image Background" section
Choose a different preset or custom prompt
Click "Regenerate Background"

Good to know: Each regeneration counts as a new AI generation. If you still have free generations remaining, it uses one of those. Otherwise it uses tokens. This lets you experiment with different looks (cozy, studio, seasonal, etc.) until your product images feel right for your store.

Running Low on Tokens? If you've used your free generations and run out of tokens, the "Regenerate" dialog will offer a Token Top-Up so you can purchase additional token packs right away.

Background Sets: Swap & Reuse

Once you've generated backgrounds, you don't need to generate again every time you want to change your product's look. The Background Sets panel in the product editor lets you switch between backgrounds instantly and for free.

Swapping Backgrounds

Each product keeps a history of its generated background sets. You can switch between them at any time:

Current Backgrounds: Your most recently applied background set
Previous Sets: Any background sets you've generated before for this product
Original Image: Revert to the original product mockup with no background applied

Swapping between existing sets is always free — it does not use a free generation or any tokens.

Reusing Backgrounds From Other Products

If you have multiple products of the same type (e.g. several mugs or several phone cases), you can reuse a background set from one product on another:

Open the product editor for the product you want to update
Scroll to the Background Sets section
Look for cards from your other products of the same type
Click "Use this set" to clone the backgrounds onto your current product

No extra cost: Reusing backgrounds from another product does not count as a new AI generation. It copies the existing background images, so it doesn't use free generations or tokens.

Free AI Backgrounds

3 Free Generations Per Account

Every Pixerr account starts with 3 free AI background generations. This gives you a chance to try out the feature and see the quality before committing to a plan or purchasing tokens.

Account-wide: The 3 free generations are shared across all your products, not per product
Only successful generations count: If a background generation fails or is cancelled, it does not use one of your free generations
Swapping and reusing don't count: Switching between existing background sets or cloning backgrounds from another product is always free

How to Check Your Remaining Free Generations

In the product editor, the Product Image Background section shows your current status:

"3 free backgrounds included" — you haven't used any yet
"2 free AI backgrounds remaining" / "1 free AI background remaining" — partially used
"Free backgrounds used" — all 3 have been used; future generations require tokens

After your free generations: Once all 3 free backgrounds have been used, generating new backgrounds uses tokens from your monthly allowance or purchased token packs. Swapping and reusing backgrounds remains free.

How Tokens Work

After your 3 free generations are used, each new AI background generation uses tokens from your AI token balance. Here's what you need to know:

Free First: Your first 3 background generations are free — no tokens needed
Monthly Allowance: Your subscription plan includes a monthly token allowance for ongoing use
Token Costs: Each background generation uses tokens (the exact cost is shown in the background dialog before you confirm)
View Costs: Current token costs per background are displayed in your dashboard and in the background generation dialog
Token Packs: You can purchase additional token packs (Mini, Standard, or Mega) anytime if you need more
No cost to swap or reuse: Switching between existing background sets or cloning backgrounds from another product never uses tokens

Pro tip: Make the most of your free generations by trying different styles on your most important products first. You can always reuse those backgrounds on similar products for free.

Top-Ups & Limits

What Happens When Free Generations and Tokens Run Out?

Once your 3 free generations are used and you run low or hit zero tokens, new background generation is temporarily blocked. You can still swap between existing backgrounds and reuse backgrounds from other products. To generate new backgrounds, here's how to continue:

Option 1: Purchase Token Packs

Buy a one-time Token Pack (Mini, Standard, or Mega) to get more tokens right away:

Available directly from the background generation dialog when you're low on tokens
Also available from your dashboard
Tokens are added immediately after payment completes

Option 2: Upgrade Your Plan

Upgrade to a higher subscription tier (Creator or Pro) to get a larger monthly token allowance.

Note: As soon as your token balance updates (from a top-up or plan upgrade), you can generate backgrounds again immediately. And remember — swapping and reusing existing backgrounds is always free regardless of your token balance.
